Is this the end for the Bucs' veteran? Makhehlene Makhaula has hinted he could retire this Saturday if Orlando Pirates clinch the Betway Premiership title.

As Orlando Pirates stand on the precipice of their first league title in 14 years, the focus isn’t just on the silverware—it’s on the veteran engine room general who might be calling it a career. Makhehlene Makhaula, the 36-year-old midfield stalwart, has hinted that securing the 2025/26 Betway Premiership crown would be the ultimate “swansong” for his professional journey.

A Dream Conclusion at Mayfair

Since arriving from AmaZulu, Makhaula has been the defensive anchor the Buccaneers desperately needed. While he may not always grab the headlines like the flashy wingers, his 16 appearances this term have provided the stability that allowed the Soweto giants to leapfrog Mamelodi Sundowns in the standings.

With his 37th birthday approaching in November, Makhaula admits that the intensity of training—and the hunger of the younger players—has him contemplating his future:

“The young guys always want to challenge me… when I try to take things easy, they always come hard at me,” Makhaula noted. “My wish is the league. It would be a dream come true.”

The Math: Why Saturday is the Big Day

Following Sundowns’ shock 3-2 loss to TS Galaxy, the path to glory is wide open. Pirates currently hold a significant advantage:

  • Goal Difference: Pirates boast a +44 GD compared to Sundowns’ +36.
  • The Target: Four points from the final two games guarantees the title. However, a simple win against Durban City this Saturday effectively seals the deal, as it would require an impossible goal-swing for Sundowns to catch them.

Considering Pirates have only lost three times all season—and never by more than a single goal—the odds of them surrendering the title now are slim to none.

Would the “Ghost” Miss Him?

The debate among the Orlando faithful is growing. While some believe the “New Blood” is ready to take over, many feel Makhaula’s veteran leadership and “dirty work” in the middle of the park are irreplaceable, especially with a CAF Champions League campaign looming next season.

Whether he chooses to play on or retire at the summit, his impact on the 2025/26 campaign has been undeniable.
