Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that midfielder George Matlou will leave Naturena when his contract expires in June 2026 as Fernando Da Cruz begins his squad clear-out.

The rebuilding project under new mastermind Fernando Da Cruz is officially underway, and the first major casualties are starting to fall. Kaizer Chiefs have formally confirmed that 27-year-old attacking midfielder George Matlou will leave the club when his contract officially expires on June 30, 2026.

The announcement brings a curtain down on Matlou’s four-year stay in Johannesburg. He becomes the second player to officially say goodbye to Amakhosi during this window, following teenage defender Aden McCarthy’s pioneering move to Azerbaijan-based outfit Sabah FK.

Ending the Trophy Drought

Matlou arrived at Naturena in July 2022 from cross-town rivals Swallows FC amidst immense expectations, alongside Dillan Solomons and Kamohelo Mahlatsi. While persistent injury struggles hampered his consistency and limited his overall minutes across his tenure, he played an important structural squad role during the 2024/25 campaign, helping the team famously hoist the Nedbank Cup to end the club’s agonizing silverware drought.

In a formal statement, the club expressed their appreciation for the Soweto-born midfielder:

“After four seasons with Kaizer Chiefs, George Matlou’s contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of June 2026… We thank George for his commitment and contribution to Amakhosi and wish him well in his future career.”

The Da Cruz Clean-Out: Who is Next?

Matlou entering the free agency market is merely the tip of the iceberg. Coach Fernando Da Cruz is tasked with shaping a ruthless, elite squad capable of competing in the upcoming domestic season and navigating the grueling demands of the CAF Confederation Cup.

To make room for incoming talent, a massive squad overhaul is imminent. Heavy speculation and insider reports suggest a massive exodus list is looming at Naturena, with high-profile names rumored to follow Matlou out the door, including:

  • Gastón Sirino (Forward)
  • Sibongiseni Mthethwa (Midfielder)
  • Pule Mmodi (Winger)
  • Tashreeq Morris (Striker)
  • Fiacre Ntwari (Goalkeeper)
