South African football is celebrating yet another massive export to Europe as 22-year-old central defender Olwethu Makhanya officially completed his high-profile transfer to Scottish Premiership giants Rangers FC.
The former Stellenbosch FC product has signed a lucrative four-year contract (with an option for an extra year) in a deal worth a staggering $4.5 million (approximately R75 million) from MLS side Philadelphia Union.
The Rise of a Local Champion
Makhanya’s journey to one of Europe’s most historic clubs is a testament to sheer grit and rapid development. Having burst onto the local scene in the DStv Premiership with Stellenbosch FC, he caught the eye of American scouts and made the switch to Major League Soccer in July 2023.
After paying his dues with Philadelphia Union II, Makhanya broke into the senior team in style during the 2025 season. He played an instrumental role in helping the Union clinch the prestigious MLS Supporters’ Shield, earning a reputation as one of the hardest-working young center-backs in North America.
Stepping Onto the Global Stage
His stellar club form did not go unnoticed back home. Makhanya earned his maiden senior national team cap for Bafana Bafana in May 2026 and subsequently traveled with Hugo Broos’ squad to represent South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to the Rangers media channels after putting pen to paper, an emotional Makhanya could barely contain his excitement:
“I can’t even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true.”

Rangers have been aggressive in the summer transfer market as they look to revamp their squad and bridge the gap on their fierce rivals. As the club’s eighth signing of the window, Makhanya brings athleticism, composure on the ball, and international pedigree to the Ibrox backline.
