20-year-old flyhalf prodigy Vusi Moyo opens up about his upcoming Springbok Test debut against Wales this Saturday. Read Rassie Erasmus's assessment.

JOHANNESBURG — The dawn of a new era in South African rugby is officially here. When the Springboks line up against Wales this Saturday for their third Nations Championship fixture, all eyes will be on 20-year-old flyhalf sensation Vusi Moyo, who is set to earn his highly anticipated first international Test cap.

Moyo is part of a thrilling contingent of four debutants named by head coach Rassie Erasmus, alongside Jaco Williams, Ruben van Heerden, and Carlu Sadie. However, it is the meteoric rise of the young playmaker that has sent shockwaves of excitement through the South African rugby landscape.

Just months ago, Moyo was steering the ship for the Junior Springboks and making his senior franchise debut for the Hollywoodbets Sharks. Now, following a dazzling cameo performance off the bench against the Barbarians and an irresistible run of form in training, he has been fast-tracked straight into the ultimate arena.

‘A Surreal Moment’ for the 20-Year-Old

Reflecting on the whirlwind week, Moyo admitted that the reality of wearing the green and gold still feels like a dream:

“It’s every kid’s dream to be part of this Springbok set-up. When the call came through on Monday, my heart missed a beat. It’s very special to be around Cobus (Reinach) and the other players around me. This set-up is much bigger, and you have to make decisions a lot quicker. Personally, it’s about making my family and the people that have been with me along the way proud.”

The Next Handré Pollard? Rassie Weighs In

Springbok mastermind Rassie Erasmus didn’t hold back his praise when discussing why the young flyhalf is ready for the deep end, drawing a striking physical comparison to a young double-World Cup winner.

“Sometimes you get a really skilful flyhalf, sometimes you get a small, nippy flyhalf,” Erasmus noted. “When Handré (Pollard) was a young guy coming through, he was somebody who took the ball to the line. I think Vusi, for his age, is a very big boy. He certainly doesn’t stand back from the physical side of the game. For a big guy, he’s got really soft hands. We want to see him in a Test match.”

With his lethal combination of brute physicality, clinical tactical kicking, and elite vision, Moyo represents the future of the Springbok number 10 jersey.
