Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner is officially a free agent after leaving Sekhukhune United. Will Orlando Pirates make a transfer swoop to challenge Sipho Chaine?

The Betway Premiership transfer market has just been handed a major shake-up. Sekhukhune United have officially confirmed the departure of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner after opting against renewing his expiring contract at the Limpopo-based outfit.

The 28-year-old shot-stopper, who established himself as Babina Noko’s undisputed number one after joining ahead of the 2023/24 season, is now officially a free agent. Leaner’s elite domestic consistency was rewarded earlier this year when he earned his senior international debut for South Africa in a friendly against Panama.

In a formal send-off statement, Sekhukhune United showered the keeper with praise:

“His performances and professionalism were rewarded with a call-up to the South African senior national team, a testament to his dedication and quality. The club extends its sincere gratitude for his commitment and contribution. We thank you, Renaldo.”

The Big Question: Will Orlando Pirates Pounce?

With Leaner hitting the market without a transfer fee, speculation is already mounting over his next destination. The unattached international is bound to attract a massive wave of suitors, but Orlando Pirates have quickly emerged as a fascinating potential landing spot.

The Sea Robbers’ current goalkeeping hierarchy shapes up as follows:

  • Sipho Chaine: The undisputed first-choice keeper, who is currently pushing hard within the national team structures.
  • Melusi Buthelezi: The reliable current deputy waiting in the wings.

Despite having two quality options, a large faction of the Ghost faithful believes that adding a keeper of Leaner’s pedigree would create elite competition at Mayfair. Forcing Chaine to fight tooth and nail for his spot could be exactly what elevates his game to become South Africa’s long-term number one.

A Busy Day at Babina Noko

Leaner’s exit caps off an incredibly busy window for Sekhukhune United. The club simultaneously confirmed the high-profile appointment of former Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cédric Kaze as their new head trainer.

While Leaner narrowly missed out on the final Bafana Bafana World Cup squad, his proven PSL track record guarantees he won’t be in the unemployment line for very long.
