Bobby Motaung Kaizer Chiefs interview

Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung has broken his silence following the club’s disappointing exit from the Nedbank Cup, attributing the 2-1 loss against Stellenbosch FC to a grueling fixture list that has pushed the squad to its physical limits.

The Fatigue Factor: A Relentless February

Speaking at a media briefing, Motaung pointed out that the squad has been juggling three major competitions simultaneously: the Betway Premiership, the CAF Confederation Cup, and the Nedbank Cup.

“It’s a tough one. We have been on a tight schedule with back-to-back intense games,” Motaung explained. “The travel and the frequency of matches across three competitions have taken their toll. We lost, and while it’s painful, the Nedbank Cup is now out of the picture. We have to shift our energy immediately.”

The “Cup Final” in Polokwane

Despite the domestic setback, the focus at Naturena has shifted entirely to the continent. Motaung has labeled this Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup encounter against Al Masry SC at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium as a “Cup Final.”

  • The Stakes: A victory on Sunday would likely secure Amakhosi a spot in the quarter-finals, keeping their dream of a first-ever Confederation Cup title alive.
  • The Mentality: “For us, it’s very important. We want to go to the final of this Cup. We have been doing well up until the loss on Wednesday, so we must regain our confidence and bounce back,” Motaung added.

Strategic Pivot: Two Fronts Remaining

With the Nedbank Cup exit, Kaizer Chiefs’ season now rests on two pillars:

  1. CAF Confederation Cup: Aiming for continental silverware.
  2. Betway Premiership: Fighting for a Top-3 finish to ensure return to CAF competition next season.

Management remains optimistic that by narrowing their focus to these two fronts, the “Nabi Project” can still deliver a successful season for the Amakhosi faithful.
