South African rugby icon Naas Botha has finally shared the heartfelt motivation behind his family’s recent emigration to the United States. The 68-year-old former Springbok flyhalf, who recently stepped down from his role as Director of Rugby at Hoërskool Eldoraigne and exited the SuperSport analyst desk, has traded the Highveld for the heartland of America.
Settling in Kansas, the move marks a significant lifestyle shift for one of the most famous boots in rugby history.
Family First: The Soccer Scholarship Connection
While Naas is the household name, this move is firmly centered on the next generation of Botha athletes. The primary driver for the relocation is the academic and sporting future of his daughters.
- The Kansas Move: Two of his daughters, Gaeby and Lee-Gre, have secured prestigious soccer scholarships at a Kansas university.
- The Botha Athletic Pedigree: With Naas being a rugby legend and his wife, Karen Botha, being a former Olympic long jumper, the family is no stranger to elite sports.
- A “Continuation” of the Journey: Botha noted that both he and Karen had their own American chapters decades ago—Naas with the Dallas Cowboys and Karen at the University of Nebraska.
“This move is simply a continuation of that journey and is in the best interest of our family,” Botha stated. “Our children have found their own opportunities here.”
The Legend of the “Golden Boot”
Despite living abroad, Botha’s legacy in South African rugby remains untouchable. He redefined the flyhalf position during an era of international isolation, becoming the most feared goal-kicker in the world.
A Message to South Africa
Though he has relocated, Botha emphasized that his heart remains firmly rooted in the country that cheered him on for decades. He described his time with the Springboks and Northern Transvaal as one of the “greatest honors” of his life.
“South Africa will forever hold a special place in our hearts… We thank everyone for their understanding.”
