The University of Cape Town’s Investment Society (InvestSoc) is celebrating a quarter-century of excellence. Far more than just a campus club, the nation’s largest student-run executive society has hit its 25-year milestone with a redefined mission: moving beyond the “ivory tower” of academia to tackle South Africa’s national financial literacy crisis.
Under the leadership of current president Ethan Gondo, InvestSoc is shifting its focus from high-volume events to high-impact, practical quality.
A Legacy of Professional Pipelines
For 25 years, InvestSoc has served as the premier bridge between UCT students and the corporate world. For Gondo—a third-year Business Science student and former St Stithians head prefect—the society’s draw was its undeniable professional “pipeline.”
InvestSoc’s Core Pillars of Success:
- Industry Exposure: Providing direct access to South Africa’s leading investment and corporate firms.
- Employment Opportunities: Facilitating vacation work and full-time placement for graduates.
- Acumen Development: Cultivating a deep understanding of the socio-political and economic forces shaping the Mzansi market.
The “Quality Over Quantity” Shift
As the society enters its 2026 term, Gondo is auditing InvestSoc’s traditional offerings to eliminate redundancy. The goal is to ensure every initiative provides a tangible takeaway.
“We are on a mission to ensure that people leave our events with something practical—whether it’s the skills to apply for a top-tier firm or the confidence to engage with industry specialists.” — Ethan Gondo

Breaking Borders: The SASIC Initiative
InvestSoc’s influence is no longer confined to the UCT campus. The society has co-founded and currently chairs the South African Student Investment Society Coalition (SASIC). This bold new collective addresses a burning question from the corporate sector: How are university societies promoting financial literacy for all South Africans?
The SASIC Roadmap for 2026:
- High School Outreach: Bridging the gap by visiting schools to teach fundamental money management.
- Financial Dossiers: Producing and distributing comprehensive financial literacy guides tailored for Grade 10 to 12 learners.
- National Integration: Unifying investment societies across various universities to create a singular, powerful voice for economic empowerment.
Strengthening the Alumni Link
To support these ambitious goals, InvestSoc is revitalizing its alumni database and mentorship programme. By reconnecting with former members who are now specialists in the field, the society is creating a lifelong ecosystem of support and social responsiveness.
