Over a decade after the strike that shook the foundations of South African television, veteran producer Mfundi Vundla has broken his silence on the 2014 mass dismissal of 16 Generations actors.

In a candid interview on 947’s Drive with Thando, Vundla provided his perspective on the standoff that led to the rebranding of the show as Generations: The Legacy. The interview, which went viral on March 13, 2026, has reignited a fierce national debate about workers’ rights versus production mandates.

The Battle Over Royalties: “Go Fight Your Own Battles”

At the heart of the 2014 crisis was a demand for royalties and better pay—a battle Vundla insists was misdirected. He clarified that as a producer, he was caught between the cast and the broadcaster, the SABC.

  • Broadcaster Responsibility: Vundla noted that since the SABC owns the show, they—not the production house—are responsible for royalty payouts.
  • Refusal to Mediate: He revealed that the actors wanted him to champion their cause against the SABC, a role he flatly rejected.
  • Contractual Obligations: “I have my own battles to fight as a producer. I have a contract; I have to deliver to the SABC,” Vundla explained.

Protecting the Vision

Vundla’s most striking comments centered on his personal connection to the show. He framed the dismissal not just as a business decision, but as a defense of his creative life’s work.

“I created a show which I was extremely proud of; it was a dream. Nobody is gonna mess with my dream. And I said, ‘You don’t mess with my dream. I created it.’”

He further noted that the actors were given a strict deadline to return to set. When the cameras remained idle past that cutoff, the decision was made to terminate the entire core cast.

The “Generations 16” Legacy: A Decade Later

The incident remains a landmark case in the South African entertainment industry, highlighting the tension between talent and “the machine.”
