In a match where form usually goes out the window, the latest Soweto Derby lived up to its reputation for grit over glamour. Orlando Pirates entered the FNB Stadium as the heavy favorites, but a disciplined Kaizer Chiefs side managed to scrap their way to a 1-1 draw.
While the Buccaneers dominated large stretches of possession, they lacked the clinical edge to bury their rivals. Here is the breakdown of who stood tall under the derby lights and who struggled to find their rhythm.
THE FIRED: Top Performers
Kamogelo Sebelebele – 7.5/10 (Man of the Match for Pirates)
The man of the hour. Sebelebele’s late equalizer didn’t just save a point; it saved the Buccaneers’ dignity. His performance was a masterclass in “box-to-box” utility. He was dominant in the air, fearless in the tackle, and showed the composure of a veteran to find the back of the net when the pressure was at its peak.
Relebohile Mofokeng – 7.5/10
Even when he isn’t scoring, the PSL Player of the Month is a nightmare for defenders. Mofokeng’s movement was relentless, constantly dragging the Chiefs’ backline out of position. While credit must go to Thabiso Monyane for a brilliant defensive job on him, Mofokeng remained the primary outlet for every Pirates attack.
Thalente Mbatha – 7.0/10
Mbatha was the “cool head” in a heated environment. He anchored the midfield with maturity, recycling possession efficiently and ensuring the Bucs didn’t lose their shape when Chiefs tried to break on the counter.
❄️ THE FLOPPED: Underperformers
Sipho Chaine – 5.0/10
After a season defined by a staggering 16 clean sheets, this was a day to forget for Chaine. He looked uncharacteristically shaky. Beyond the goal conceded, his distribution—usually a key weapon for Pirates—was poor, often failing to find his targets and stalling the team’s transition from defense to attack.
Makheleni Makhuala – 5.5/10
The derby intensity seemed to pass Makhuala by. He struggled to win the midfield battle and offered almost nothing in terms of creative spark. Against a Chiefs side that overloaded the middle, Pirates needed more from him to break the lines.
Lebone Seema – 5.5/10
The usually “rock-solid” Seema had several lapses in concentration. He was caught out of position on multiple occasions and failed to command the penalty area with his usual authority, leading to some nervy moments for the Ghost.
The Opposition Wall: Brandon Petersen
It would be remiss not to mention the performance of Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen. While Chaine struggled, Petersen delivered a legendary performance, making six world-class saves to keep Pirates at bay. His leadership and communication were the primary reasons Amakhosi walked away with a point.
