Rassie Erasmus Honored With National Order of Ikhamanga in Gold

South African rugby mastermind Rassie Erasmus has officially etched his name deeper into the nation’s history books. The Presidency has bestowed the National Order of Ikhamanga in Gold upon the double World Cup-winning Springbok head coach, sparking a wave of national celebration and high praise from SA Rugby leadership.

The Order of Ikhamanga is South Africa’s premier recognition for citizens who have achieved monumental excellence in fields like sport, arts, culture, literature, music, and journalism. The “Gold” tier is the highest level of this order, reserved for exceptional, transformative impact.

“Inspirational Leadership” That Healed a Nation

In its official decree, the Presidency lauded Erasmus for his revolutionary vision, stating his nomination was a direct result of his:

“Inspirational leadership in national and international rugby that has propelled the Springboks to repeated Rugby World Cup championships. Victory on the field of play has advanced social cohesion among South Africans and raised the nation’s esteem in the international community.”

Under Erasmus’ leadership—both as head coach in 2019 and Director of Rugby in 2023—the Springboks did more than just win silverware; they became a vivid symbol of what a unified South Africa can achieve.

SA Rugby Salutes a “True Son of the Soil”

SA Rugby President Mark Alexander led the rugby fraternity in praising the iconic tactician, emphasizing that the accolade stretches far beyond tactics on a rugby pitch.

“This prestigious honour is a fitting recognition of his outstanding contribution to rugby and to the promotion of social cohesion in our country,” Alexander remarked. “Rassie’s achievements have united South Africans across communities, instilling pride and inspiring a spirit of togetherness through the game we love.”

Alexander concluded with a powerful tribute:

“Rassie Erasmus is a true son of the South African soil, and this accolade reflects the immense impact he has had both on and off the field.”
