In the fiercely divided world of South African football, crossing the Soweto divide is rare—but completely switching your structural allegiance is almost unheard of. Yet, Kaizer Chiefs fan-favorite Mduduzi Shabalala has opened up about his dramatic journey from a staunch Orlando Pirates household to pledging that he will officially “die a Kaizer Chiefs fan.”
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, currently recovering from a broken arm sustained during the business end of the campaign, shared insight into how his professional integration at Naturena completely rewrote his childhood loyalties.
Shielding the Badge: Converting the Household
Growing up in a home entirely dominated by Sea Robbers supporters, Shabalala openly admits he worshipped former Pirates icon Thembinkosi Lorch. He vividly recalls sitting in the stands around 2019, watching Lorch turn a Soweto Derby on its head after a defense-splitting pass from Ben Motshwari.
However, pulling on the iconic Gold and Black jersey changed everything for the Krugersdorp-born prodigy.
“I did support Orlando Pirates — everyone at home supported Pirates,” Shabalala revealed. “But now, since I’ve joined Kaizer Chiefs I had to change and support Chiefs, and I will die as a Kaizer Chiefs fan.”
The young maestro didn’t stop at his own allegiance; he actively brought the Naturena revolution home with him.
“At home, I have influenced my mother and siblings to switch to Chiefs but my father has refused to change. Even now he threatens to beat us, he loves Pirates very much,” Shabalala added jokingly.
Around the Grounds: Final Day Drama Reaches Boiling Point
While Shabalala watches from the sidelines, the rest of the Betway Premiership is gearing up for a heart-stopping final matchday this Saturday.
Can Orlando Pirates Cross the Finish Line?
Following a tense draw against Durban City at Orlando Stadium mid-week, the Buccaneers have left the back door open. To end a grueling 14-year league title drought, Pirates must secure a victory away to Orbit College on Saturday.
It will be an absolute dogfight. Orbit College is level on 24 points with Marumo Gallants and is fighting for top-flight survival to escape the promotion-relegation playoff slot. With Gallants facing a relaxed Stellenbosch FC side, Orbit College will be scrapping for every blade of grass against the Buccaneers, meaning the championship race is on a knife-edge.
