The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially in its final hours, and FIFA has officially locked in the match officials for the tournament’s highly anticipated curtain-raiser.
Brazilian referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio has been handed the whistle for the blockbuster Group A clash between co-hosts Mexico and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
The massive opening match will take place this Thursday, 11 June, at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. With a massive global audience tuning in, FIFA’s choice of the seasoned 44-year-old South American underscores the immense high-profile nature of this fixture.
An All-Brazilian Line-Up on the Field
Sampaio won’t be navigating the electric atmosphere of the Aztec Stadium alone. FIFA has confirmed a complete, highly synchronized all-Brazilian on-field team for Match 1:
- Head Referee: Wilton Pereira Sampaio (Brazil)
- Assistant Referee 1: Bruno Pires (Brazil)
- Assistant Referee 2: Bruno Boschilia (Brazil)
- VAR Official: Nicolás Gallo (Colombia)
A Proven Pedigree on the World Stage
Sampaio boasts an incredibly decorated refereeing resume. Rising through the ranks of Brazil’s highly competitive Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, he has been an established fixture on FIFA’s international list since 2013.
This tournament marks his third consecutive World Cup appearance. Sampaio previously served as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the 2018 edition in Russia before taking charge of four high-pressure matches on the pitch at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar—including the explosive England vs. France quarter-final.
Officiating runs deep in his family; his younger brother, Sávio Pereira Sampaio, has also been a certified FIFA international official since 2022.
