The Ndungane twins stand as one of the most remarkable and inspiring stories in South African rugby folklore. Breaking through systemic barriers from the Eastern Cape, identical brothers Akona and Odwa made history as the first-ever set of twins to wear the green and gold at the international level.
But when it comes to the ultimate bragging rights in the Test arena, which brother edged ahead in caps?
Akona Takes the Cap Crown
While both identical twins enjoyed legendary careers at the domestic provincial level, Akona Ndungane officially claims the crown for the most Springbok appearances, finishing his international stint with 11 Test caps earned between 2006 and 2007.
Making his debut against the Wallabies in Brisbane, the explosive Blue Bulls winger quickly locked down a spot in the national setup during his high-intensity international window, cementing his place in history as Springbok #774.
Odwa Strikes Back in Finishing Power
Not to be completely outdone, Odwa Ndungane carved out his own iconic legacy shortly after. Making his debut in 2008 against Italy at Newlands (Springbok #798), the Sharks fan favorite went on to secure 9 Test caps up until 2011.
Though he fell just two caps short of matching his brother’s tally, Odwa takes the bragging rights on the scoreboard—crossing the whitewash for two international tries (against Australia and Wales) compared to Akona’s single try against England.
Both born in Mthatha and developed through Hudson Park High School—the only two Springboks the East London institution has ever produced—the twins have seamlessly transitioned from flying down the wings to serving as prominent South African sports brand ambassadors.
