Mbekezeli Mbokazi defending for Bafana Bafana vs Canada in World Cup Round of 32.

South Africa’s historic FIFA World Cup run came to a crushing end in Los Angeles, falling 1-0 to co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32. While Hugo Broos’ side showed immense defensive grit, a lack of attacking punch and a few costly individual drop-offs ultimately doomed Bafana Bafana to a 91st-minute exit.

Here is the tactical breakdown of who fired and who flopped on a devastating night in LA.

The Fires: South Africa’s Standout Performers

Mbekezeli Mbokazi — 8/10 (Player of the Match)

The young center-back played well beyond his years on the grandest stage. Unfazed by Canada’s aggressive high-press, Mbokazi was exceptionally composed on the ball, timed his tackles to perfection, and made multiple goal-saving interventions. It is incredibly cruel that he finished on the losing side after a world-class defensive display.

Khuliso Mudau — 7/10

Another incredibly dependable shift from the right-back. Mudau was locked in a fierce tactical battle all evening and even managed to hold his own when Canada unleashed global superstar Alphonso Davies off the bench. While he occasionally got caught too high up the pitch trying to spark an overlap, his recovery pace and consistency kept Bafana alive.

The Flops: Below Par When It Mattered Most

Teboho Mokoena — 3/10

Returning to the starting lineup after serving a suspension, the midfield engine looked completely off the pace. Mokoena was physically overwhelmed by Canada’s central trio, consistently came out second-best in critical 50/50 duels, and failed to dictate the tempo or distribute cleanly. His lack of grip in the engine room left South Africa starved of control.

Aubrey Modiba — 4/10

A deeply frustrating night for the left-back. Modiba struggled heavily to track Canada’s overlapping runs, and offensively, his delivery lacked its usual sharpness. In a heartbreaking twist, Canada’s late winner originated entirely down his flank, where a lack of defensive closure allowed the cross that led to Eustáquio’s volley.

Oswin Appollis — 4/10

Tasked with being South Africa’s creative spark on the wing, Appollis cuttingly went missing. He struggled to beat his marker out wide, wasted the precious few transition opportunities Bafana managed to engineer, and lacked composure when a rare 15-yard sights of goal opened up in the second half.

The Verdict

This wasn’t the fluid, fearless Bafana Bafana team we saw against South Korea. Heavily reliant on sluggish wing play and pinned deep inside their own half, South Africa simply offered too little threat going forward. While the defensive rearguard gave everything, you cannot survive at this level without a counter-punch. Broos’ men head home with heads high, but a massive rebuilding phase now begins.
