The coaching carousel of the FIFA World Cup 2026 has claimed another high-profile manager. Carlos Queiroz officially announced his departure as Ghana head coach on Sunday, following the Black Stars’ heartbreaking elimination in the Round of 32.
Ghana’s tournament run came to an end in Kansas City after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia, a match where the African giants struggled to break down their opposition, registering just eight attempts on goal.
“Ambitious Foundations” – Queiroz Reflects on His Exit
The veteran tactical nomad, who famously coached Iran at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and guided South Africa’s Bafana Bafana to qualification for the 2002 World Cup, leaves Ghana just months after taking the job. He was appointed in April 2026 following the dismissal of Otto Addo.
In his farewell statement, the former Real Madrid manager and Manchester United assistant coach issued a powerful parting message to Ghanaian football leadership:
“I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.”
Queiroz’s exit leaves the Ghana Football Association searching for a new long-term technical leader to rebuild ahead of the next Africa Cup of Nations cycle
