Former Kaizer Chiefs winger turned football analyst Junior Khanye has cast severe doubt over Amakhosi’s chances of ending their decade-long trophy drought in the 2026/27 season, despite growing optimism around the club’s recent trajectory.
Although the Soweto giants secured a third-place Betway Premiership finish last term—their highest league standing in six years—they once again ended the campaign without silverware. Chiefs have collected just one trophy over the last 11 seasons, cycling through 10 head coaches in that span.
Khanye Questions Attacking Depth and Quality
Speaking on iDiski TV, Khanye offered a blunt evaluation of the current squad, asserting that the team lacks the required depth and elite quality to compete with domestic heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates:
“This club is not serious. I’m so sorry, it’s a sad truth, but we must speak the truth. Those players, even if you bring the Spanish coach who won the World Cup (Vicente del Bosque), they won’t win,” Khanye stated.
Examining Amakhosi’s forward line, Khanye singled out key figures while questioning their ability to carry the club across a grueling, multi-competition schedule:
- On the Frontline: “Duba has been there and Velebayi as well. The player who scored for them was Lilepo. He has a strong character, good technique and height, but he’s not a special player because he couldn’t carry Kaizer Chiefs.”
- The Final Verdict: “For me, I don’t see them winning a single trophy this season. They will win a few games, but no trophy.”
With Sundowns and treble-winning Pirates continuing to bolster their squads, Khanye believes Chiefs remain several steps behind the country’s top two forces.
