Orlando Pirates have been dealt a major setback with striker Evidence Makgopa ruled out for around two months after suffering a knee injury.
The 26-year-old forward has reportedly been carrying the problem since the 2026 FIFA World Cup and continued playing through the issue during pre-season.
Now, the Pirates medical team has recommended an extended recovery period, meaning Makgopa could be sidelined until around October.
Makgopa to Miss Several Weeks
According to reports, Makgopa’s injury does not require surgery.
Instead, the striker will undergo a period of rest and rehabilitation before he can return to competitive football.
The setback comes at an unfortunate time for the forward, who has established himself as an important attacking option for both Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana.
The club’s priority will be ensuring that Makgopa makes a full recovery rather than rushing him back prematurely.
Makgopa Coming Off a Successful Season
Makgopa enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign with Pirates.
He scored six league goals and provided four assists, contributing to a hugely successful season for the Buccaneers.
Pirates went on to complete a domestic treble, lifting the Betway Premiership, MTN8 and Carling Knockout trophies.
His performances also strengthened his position in the Bafana Bafana setup.
Another Concern for Bafana Bafana
Makgopa’s injury could also create a problem for South Africa.
The striker has become a trusted option under head coach Hugo Broos, having made his senior international debut in 2021.
He made an immediate impact by scoring twice against Uganda in a 3-2 victory and has since featured at major international tournaments.
Makgopa represented South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics, played at consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, and featured in all four of Bafana’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
AFCON Qualifiers in Doubt
The timing of the injury is particularly frustrating for Bafana.
With Makgopa expected to spend approximately two months on the sidelines, his participation in the upcoming 2026 AFCON qualifiers looks highly unlikely.
That would leave Broos without one of his established attacking options as South Africa prepare for their next international assignments.
For now, Makgopa’s focus will be on rehabilitation and returning to full fitness.
