Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy is set to face Lamine Yamal and Barcelona after Sabah FK were drawn against the Spanish giants.

Aden McCarthy’s journey from Kaizer Chiefs’ academy to European football has taken another remarkable turn. The former Amakhosi defender is now set to share the UEFA Champions League stage with Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal after Sabah FK were drawn against the Spanish giants in the 2026/27 league phase.

Sabah, who qualified for the Champions League league phase after an impressive run through the qualifying rounds, were placed in Pot 4 for Thursday’s draw. Barcelona were among the Pot 1 heavyweights.

The final draw confirmed that Barcelona will face Sabah FK, meaning McCarthy could now line up against one of the most exciting young players in world football.

From Kaizer Chiefs to Europe’s biggest stage

McCarthy’s rise is a significant story for South African football.

The 22-year-old defender came through the Kaizer Chiefs system, making his senior breakthrough at Naturena before moving to Sabah in July 2026. Current player data lists him as a Sabah defender under contract until June 2029.

His move to Azerbaijan has now opened a completely different chapter in his career.

After helping Sabah navigate the Champions League qualifiers, McCarthy is heading into the league phase alongside some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

And among those opponents is Barcelona.

McCarthy vs Lamine Yamal

For the South African defender, the Barcelona fixture could be one of the biggest tests of his young career.

Yamal has already established himself as one of the leading young stars in world football, while McCarthy will have the opportunity to test himself against Barcelona’s elite attacking talent.

The match also creates a fascinating contrast: a player who developed through the South African football system now facing a global superstar on Europe’s biggest club stage.

For many Kaizer Chiefs supporters, it will be a proud moment.

From Naturena to facing Lamine Yamal in the Champions League — McCarthy’s journey has certainly gone global.

Sabah’s historic Champions League campaign

Sabah’s qualification for the league phase is already a major achievement for the Azerbaijani club.

The 36-team league phase will see every club play eight matches against eight different opponents, with two opponents coming from each of the four seeding pots.

Barcelona’s confirmed opponents include Manchester City, PSG, Aston Villa, Sporting CP, Feyenoord, Galatasaray, Como and Sabah.

That means McCarthy and Sabah will have the chance to compete against some of the biggest names in European football.

But the Barcelona game is undoubtedly the fixture that will attract the most attention from South African supporters.

From Naturena to Europe

McCarthy’s story is a reminder of how quickly a footballer’s career can change.

Not long ago, he was developing his career in South Africa with Kaizer Chiefs. Now he is preparing for a Champions League encounter involving Barcelona and one of football’s biggest emerging stars.
