England back-row sensation Henry Pollock could have a major decision to make about his rugby future, with the highly rated No 8 admitting he is open to playing overseas if his contract situation at Northampton Saints remains unresolved.
The 21-year-old’s current deal with Northampton is reportedly worth around £150,000 (approximately R3.3 million) per year and runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. However, negotiations over a new contract are proving complicated, potentially opening the door for interest from clubs outside England.
Pollock open to playing abroad
Pollock has made it clear that while rugby remains his immediate priority, he is not closing the door on a move abroad.
The England international recently joined boxing promoter Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Talent Agency, with Hearn reportedly valuing the young back-rower as a potential £1 million-plus player.
Pollock believes his future could eventually take him beyond English rugby.
“I definitely want to go and live in different countries, explore new sports, explore new avenues,” Pollock said.
For now, however, the 13-cap England international insists his focus remains firmly on rugby.
“At the minute rugby is my main priority so I’m focusing on that in the near future, but as I said, you never know what’s happening around the corner.”
Could South Africa be an option?
Pollock’s comments are particularly interesting for South African rugby fans, with the country home to several financially powerful franchises capable of attracting international talent.
A move to South Africa, France or Japan could potentially offer the young forward a significantly improved financial package compared with his current Northampton contract.
South African teams have also established themselves as major forces in international club rugby, with the Bulls, Sharks, Stormers and Lions competing at the highest level in the United Rugby Championship and on the European stage.
However, a move away from England would come with an important trade-off.
Pollock could potentially sacrifice some of the prestige and commercial opportunities associated with remaining available for England. That could become an important factor as he weighs his next career move.
Northampton still want to keep their star
Despite the uncertainty, Northampton have not given up hope of retaining Pollock.
Director of Rugby Phil Dowson acknowledged that negotiations are complicated but remains optimistic that an agreement can eventually be reached.
“As you can imagine, it’s complex,” Dowson said.
“There’s a few moving parts that we need to put together, but I’m hopeful. As I said before, he wants to stay and we want to keep him.”
That could be encouraging for Saints supporters, particularly given Pollock’s long-standing connection with the club.
The England star has spent his entire professional career at Northampton and admits remaining with the club would be a special outcome.
“Northampton’s been so great to me, I’ve been here my whole career and they’ve made me who I am. For me to stay here would be so special,” Pollock said.
Pollock has plenty to consider
At just 21, Pollock has plenty of time to shape what could become a hugely successful career.
His growing reputation, England experience and commercial value mean he is likely to attract interest if he becomes available, while his association with Matchroom could broaden the opportunities presented to him beyond traditional rugby.
For now, there is no confirmed move to South Africa, but Pollock’s willingness to consider overseas opportunities could put South African clubs on alert.
The coming months could therefore be crucial as Northampton attempt to secure the long-term future of one of England’s most promising young forwards.
