Lebohang Maboe’s impressive start to the season has earned the Kaizer Chiefs midfielder a place in Pitso Mosimane’s first Bafana Bafana squad since returning as national team coach.
The 31-year-old has made an immediate impact for Amakhosi, collecting back-to-back Man of the Match awards while contributing two goals and two assists.
Those performances have now been rewarded with an international recall.
Maboe is the only Kaizer Chiefs player included in Mosimane’s 30-man squad and will have the opportunity to add to his 17 Bafana caps during the upcoming international window.
MABOE: ‘IT IS A DREAM’
Maboe welcomed the opportunity to represent South Africa again and described wearing the national team shirt as a milestone he does not take for granted.
The midfielder has previously experienced the international stage, but his latest selection comes at a significant point in his career after making a strong impression at club level.
His current form has put him back in the Bafana conversation, with Mosimane now giving him an opportunity to compete for minutes in the upcoming fixtures.
BAFANA’S BUSY INTERNATIONAL WINDOW
South Africa’s next assignment will be a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, 26 September, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00.
Bafana will then travel to Cairo to face Eritrea on Wednesday, 30 September, also at 18:00.
The squad will remain in Egypt before taking on the hosts in an international friendly on Sunday, 4 October.
Maboe already has some experience against Egypt. He was part of the Bafana squad that defeated the Pharaohs 1-0 in the 2019 AFCON Round of 16, although he remained an unused substitute.
A FRESH OPPORTUNITY FOR MABOE
The midfielder will now look to carry his club form into the international setup and make an impression under Mosimane.
After establishing himself as one of Kaizer Chiefs’ early-season standout performers, Maboe has been handed another chance to add to his international career.
