Kaizer Chiefs head into the international break with fresh concerns after Lebohang Maboe was forced off during their goalless draw against Golden Arrows.
The midfielder’s injury comes at an unfortunate time for the club, with Chiefs already managing several fitness concerns and struggling to turn recent matches into victories.
Maboe Injury Adds To Chiefs’ Concerns
Maboe was forced off in the second half of Chiefs’ 0-0 draw with Golden Arrows, leaving the club waiting for clarity on the extent of his injury.
The 31-year-old has made a positive start since joining Chiefs, registering two goals and two assists in seven Betway Premiership appearances.
His form also earned him a place in Pitso Mosimane’s latest Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming matches against Guinea and Eritrea.
With the international break now providing some recovery time, Chiefs will be hoping Maboe’s injury is not serious.
Chiefs Already Dealing With Fitness Issues
Maboe is not the only Chiefs player currently dealing with an injury.
Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is expected to miss up to six weeks after suffering a knee injury in training.
Striker Wandile Duba is also facing a shorter spell on the sidelines after picking up a hip and groin problem. He is expected to be unavailable for around two weeks.
Duba’s absence was felt against Golden Arrows, with Chiefs unable to find the breakthrough as the two sides played out a goalless draw.
The young striker has scored three goals in four Betway Premiership appearances this season, making his availability an important factor for Chiefs as the campaign continues.
Another Draw Raises Questions
The result against Golden Arrows extended Chiefs’ difficult run of results.
They have now drawn four of their seven league matches and dropped points in four of their last five games.
While the international break gives some of the squad time to recover, Chiefs will need to find greater consistency when domestic action resumes.
The club will also be monitoring Maboe’s condition closely, particularly with the midfielder having been selected for Bafana Bafana duty.
Bafana Prepare For Guinea Clash
Attention now turns to international football, with South Africa preparing to face Guinea in an AFCON qualifier on Saturday, 26 September at 18:00.
The match will mark another chapter for Bafana under new head coach Pitso Mosimane.
For Chiefs, however, the immediate priority will be getting their injured players back to full fitness before the domestic campaign resumes.
