Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has added a familiar face to his technical team, appointing Marcus Mashilo as the national team’s new goalkeeper coach.
Mashilo replaces Grant Johnson, who had been serving in the role on an interim basis during Hugo Broos’ tenure.
Mashilo reunites with Mosimane
The appointment brings Mashilo back together with Mosimane, having previously worked under the coach during their time at Mamelodi Sundowns.
Mashilo spent more than a decade with the Sundowns senior team, joining in 2013 and remaining with the club until July 2024. During that period, he worked with a number of top South African goalkeepers, including players who have since featured prominently for Bafana Bafana.
He has also gained experience elsewhere in South African football, including spells with Golden Arrows and Marumo Gallants.
His familiarity with the national team environment and experience working with elite goalkeepers will now form part of Mosimane’s plans as he begins his latest assignment with Bafana Bafana.
Part-time role for Mashilo
Unlike several members of Mosimane’s technical staff, Mashilo will reportedly work with Bafana Bafana on a part-time basis.
His appointment completes another important piece of the national team’s backroom structure as preparations continue for a busy international schedule.
Mosimane’s first Bafana assignments
Mosimane’s first competitive test will come against Guinea in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on 26 September.
Bafana Bafana are scheduled to face Eritrea in Egypt on 30 September, before taking on Egypt in an international friendly on 4 October.
The Guinea fixture is scheduled to kick off at 15:00 at Orlando Amstel Arena.
With Mashilo now joining the setup, attention will turn to how the new goalkeeper coach works with Bafana’s established goalkeepers as Mosimane begins his return to the national team.
