Orlando Pirates have received a boost with Thalente Mbatha returning to full-team training ahead of their MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Orlando Pirates have received a timely boost ahead of their MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns, with Thalente Mbatha back in full-team training following a lengthy injury layoff.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been sidelined since August after suffering a knee injury, ruling him out of much of the opening phase of the 2026/27 campaign.

However, his return to training gives the Buccaneers renewed hope that he could feature in the blockbuster final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 October.

Mbatha back in contention

Pirates confirmed that Mbatha and fellow Bafana Bafana international Evidence Makgopa have resumed full-team training as they continue their respective recoveries.

Mbatha has been recovering from a knee injury sustained on 10 August, while Makgopa has been receiving treatment for patellar tendinitis since 5 August.

Both players have also featured in friendly matches as they work towards regaining full match fitness.

Their availability for the MTN8 final will ultimately depend on how they progress in training and whether they are considered ready for competitive action.

Why Mbatha’s return matters

Pirates have managed to produce positive results despite Mbatha’s absence, but the midfielder remains an important part of their squad.

His ability to win the ball, cover ground and bring aggression to the midfield provides Pirates with additional energy and balance.

Mbatha’s defensive work also allows the Buccaneers to press with greater intensity while giving their more creative players freedom to operate further forward.

With Sundowns standing between Pirates and the MTN8 trophy, having an experienced midfielder like Mbatha available could give the coaching staff another important option.

Makgopa also nearing a comeback

Evidence Makgopa’s return provides another boost for the Buccaneers.

The striker has also missed the early part of the season because of injury but has now returned to team training and played in friendly matches during his rehabilitation.

Pirates will be hoping both players can continue progressing without setbacks before the final.

Will Mbatha start against Sundowns?

There is still no guarantee that Mbatha will be ready to start the MTN8 final.

Returning to full-team training is an important step, but the midfielder must regain full match fitness before being considered for a starting role.

With the final approaching, the big question for Pirates will be whether Mbatha is ready to go from the first whistle or whether he will initially have to settle for a place on the bench.

Should Thalente Mbatha start for Orlando Pirates against Mamelodi Sundowns if he is declared fit?
