Get the latest Orlando Pirates news on Oswin Appollis, Lyle Foster, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and the Buccaneers' MTN8 final against Sundowns.

Orlando Pirates remain at the centre of several major South African football storylines during the international break, with current and former Buccaneers making headlines both at home and abroad.

Oswin Appollis is attracting growing interest from Europe, while former Pirates striker Lyle Foster appears to be facing an uncertain future with Bafana Bafana.

Meanwhile, Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s early return from injury provides another positive development ahead of South Africa’s next AFCON qualifier.

And with the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns just around the corner, the Buccaneers have plenty to focus on.

Appollis attracting attention from Europe

Oswin Appollis continues to strengthen his reputation as one of South Africa’s most exciting attacking players.

The Orlando Pirates winger is reportedly being monitored by French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, while previous reports have also linked him with interest from Portugal.

Appollis’ international performances have only increased his profile.

The 25-year-old produced a standout display in Bafana Bafana’s 5-0 victory over Eritrea, providing three assists as South Africa dominated the AFCON qualifier.

It was not the first time Appollis had achieved that feat for Bafana, having also registered three assists against Congo in 2024.

With European scouts reportedly keeping tabs on his progress, the Pirates star could become one of the names to watch when the next transfer window opens.

Foster facing Bafana Bafana uncertainty

Former Orlando Pirates forward Lyle Foster has found himself on the outside of the current Bafana Bafana picture under Pitso Mosimane.

Mosimane has made a perfect start as national team coach, guiding South Africa to three wins from three matches against Eritrea, Guinea and Egypt.

The coach has also used the period to experiment with several attacking combinations, giving opportunities to players including Brooklynn Poggenpoel, Puso Dithejane, Luther Singh and Tashreeq Matthews.

Foster, meanwhile, made his debut for Houston Dynamo last weekend after joining the MLS club on loan from Burnley.

His absence from Mosimane’s recent squads raises questions about where the 26-year-old fits into the coach’s plans going forward.

Pirates preparing for MTN8 final

While several Pirates players are making headlines internationally, attention will soon turn firmly towards domestic football.

The Buccaneers will defend their MTN8 crown against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, 10 October, with the blockbuster final scheduled for 18:00.

It promises to be another major meeting between two of South Africa’s leading clubs, with Pirates aiming to retain the trophy and Sundowns looking to claim another piece of silverware.

For the Buccaneers, it is an opportunity to make another statement against their biggest domestic rivals.

Mbokazi’s injury comeback gathers momentum

There is also encouraging news surrounding Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

The 20-year-old defender played 80 minutes for Chicago Fire in their recent MLS victory over Charlotte, marking an impressive return after suffering a thigh injury in July.

Mbokazi had initially been expected to miss the remainder of 2026, but his recovery has progressed considerably faster than anticipated.

Known affectionately as TLB, the left-footed defender even produced a crucial goal-line clearance on 27 September to help preserve Chicago Fire’s lead.

His return will be welcomed by Bafana Bafana, with Mbokazi expected to come back into contention for the AFCON qualifier against Kenya on 11 November.

From Appollis’ European admirers to Foster’s uncertain international future and Mbokazi’s impressive comeback, there is plenty happening around the Pirates camp.

But the immediate priority is clear: the MTN8 final against Sundowns.

Who will lift the MTN8 trophy on Saturday — Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns?
