The South African aviation landscape is about to look a lot more inclusive. On Friday, 6 March 2026, the University of South Africa (UNISA) will host a prestigious certification ceremony at the Sunnyside Campus in Pretoria to honor the latest graduates of the Inhlanyelo Hub Drone Industry Start-Up Business Programme.

This event marks the graduation of Drone Divas Cohort 3 (Gauteng) and celebrates a new elite group of “Advanced Drone Divas” who have secured their Beyond-Visual-Line-of-Sight (BVLOS) certifications.

More Than Just Pilots: An Entrepreneurial Revolution

Since its inception in 2023, the Drone Divas programme has empowered 50 young women with a multifaceted toolkit designed for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). These graduates are not just trained to fly; they are trained to lead. Their curriculum includes:

  • Aviation Mastery: Remote Pilot License (RPL) training approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA).
  • Technical Expertise: Radio communication and drone coding/technology development.
  • Business Acumen: Specialized entrepreneurship training to turn flight skills into sustainable start-ups.

Spotlighting Success: Happiness Godora

The programme’s impact is already being felt in classrooms across the country. Happiness Godora, a UNISA graduate and qualified teacher, has launched Edu Drones and STEM Events. By integrating drone tech into STEM education, she is inspiring the next generation of learners to see aviation as a viable career path.

Aligning with Global Innovation

According to Professor Raphael Mpofu, Interim CEO of Inhlanyelo Hub, this programme is a direct response to South Africa’s need for inclusive, technology-driven economic growth. By investing in women, UNISA is boosting its global competitiveness and fostering African-led innovation in “Catalytic Research Niche Areas.”

“The Drone Divas programme stands out as a practical solution for bridging the gender gap in aviation and emerging technology.” — Prof. Raphael Mpofu
