Kaizer Chiefs may have a quiet card to play on Tuesday evening. Thulani Mabaso, the 22-year-old defensive midfielder, is edging closer to a first-team return after months out injured.
Back in action
Mabaso has been training with the senior squad since playing his first competitive match since the injury, in Chiefs’ DStv Diski Challenge Soweto derby win. The long-term injury ruled him out in the closing stages of the 2025/26 season, so his return to match action is a welcome boost. If he features against Stellenbosch FC at home, it would be his first senior appearance of the season.
Da Cruz keeps his cards close
Whether Mabaso is involved is still unclear. Head coach Fernando Da Cruz said the team has “prepared something” for the match, but he wouldn’t discuss his selection. Asked directly whether Mabaso might be part of the surprise, he repeated that fans would see on the night.
Chiefs could be without several players, including Lebohang Maboe, Adolf Mtasingwa, Sphesihle Ndlovu, Langelihle Phili and Brandon Petersen. Da Cruz wants maximum points at home to revive Amakhosi’s Betway Premiership title challenge, and he has stressed focusing on the players available.
The club is pleased with his progress
Earlier this month, sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr said the club was happy to see Mabaso play his first competitive match since the injury. He said the return puts the midfielder closer to match readiness for the first team.
Why it matters now
Mabaso’s recovery comes as Chiefs chase consistency in the league. A start against Stellenbosch is far from certain, but training with the senior group suggests his chance is getting closer.
So the question for Chiefs fans: should Mabaso start?
