Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy has earned a place in the Bafana Bafana preliminary squad ahead of South Africa’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Kenya.
The 22-year-old defender is among the 38 players selected by head coach Pitso Mosimane for the back-to-back qualifiers, with South Africa looking to strengthen their position in the race for next year’s AFCON tournament.
McCarthy’s inclusion is another significant milestone in what has been an impressive year for the young defender since his departure from Kaizer Chiefs in June.
McCarthy catching attention in Europe
Since joining Sabah FK, McCarthy has made considerable progress and has gained valuable experience against high-level European opposition.
His performances during Sabah’s UEFA Champions League campaign have helped put his name back on the Bafana radar. The defender has already featured in four Champions League matches and has produced several eye-catching performances.
McCarthy also impressed against Manchester United at Old Trafford before finding the net against Borussia Dortmund, further raising his profile on the European stage.
His recent form has now earned him another opportunity with the national team.
Former Chiefs star proud of South African roots
Despite continuing his career abroad, McCarthy has remained vocal about his connection with South Africa and his former club, Kaizer Chiefs.
After scoring against Dortmund, the defender spoke passionately about representing his country and expressed his appreciation for the support he continues to receive from South African football fans.
McCarthy currently has one senior Bafana cap to his name, but his latest call-up gives him an opportunity to add to that tally.
Can McCarthy make the final squad?
Being included in the preliminary squad does not guarantee a place in the final team, and McCarthy will still have to impress the technical team before the final selection is made.
However, his recent Champions League experience could work in his favour as Mosimane considers his defensive options for the important matches against Kenya.
For McCarthy, the opportunity represents another step forward in his development and a chance to establish himself as a regular option for Bafana Bafana.
