South Africa’s United Rugby Championship campaign produced contrasting results on Friday night, with the Lions suffering a heavy defeat in Edinburgh while the Sharks secured an impressive bonus-point victory in Cardiff.

Both teams were on the road for their Round 4 fixtures, but they experienced very different fortunes as the Sharks strengthened their position near the top of the table and the Lions slipped down the standings.

Edinburgh too strong for the Lions

The Lions faced a difficult challenge against an Edinburgh side that entered the match unbeaten and quickly found themselves under pressure in challenging wet conditions.

The hosts opened the scoring through Matthew Currie, while Lions fly-half Chris Smith responded with a penalty to leave Edinburgh narrowly ahead at the break.

The second half, however, belonged largely to the home side.

Edinburgh extended their advantage through Mosese Tuipulotu before Harry Paterson added another try. The Lions briefly gave themselves hope when Hlekani Batho crossed from close range, but Paterson completed his brace before Geordie Gwynn put the result beyond doubt.

The Lions struggled to build sustained momentum and ultimately fell to a comprehensive defeat.

The result keeps Edinburgh unbeaten and at the top end of the URC standings, while the Lions dropped to eighth.

Sharks survive Cardiff fightback

The Sharks produced a much more positive result at Cardiff Arms Park, although they were made to work hard for their victory.

The Durban side started brightly, with Ethan Hooker crossing early on his return to action. Cardiff responded through Josh Adams, but the Sharks regained the lead when Matt Romao finished a well-executed attacking move.

Jason Jenkins then powered over to give the visitors a 17-7 advantage at half-time.

Cardiff came out strongly after the break and twice threatened to turn the game around. James Botham scored two tries as the Welsh side briefly moved in front.

The Sharks refused to panic, however, and eventually regained control through their powerful maul. Thomas du Toit and Ethan Bester both crossed as the visitors reclaimed the lead.

Romao then added another late try to complete the scoring and secure a valuable away victory.

The result lifted the Sharks to second place in the URC standings, while Cardiff dropped to seventh.

Contrasting fortunes for South Africa

It was therefore a mixed night for the South African franchises.

The Lions will need to regroup quickly after a difficult evening in Edinburgh, while the Sharks can take plenty of confidence from their ability to withstand Cardiff’s second-half comeback and finish strongly.

With the URC season still in its early stages, both teams have plenty of rugby ahead of them, but the Round 4 results have already created an interesting contrast between the two South African sides.

Cardiff Rugby 21-31 Sharks
