Fresh off their sold-out run of The Nutcracker, Cape Ballet Africa—in partnership with Global Star Events—is making its way to Johannesburg for a spectacular season of the world’s most iconic ballet, Swan Lake. The classical masterpiece will take over The Teatro at Montecasino from Friday, 7 August to Sunday, 23 August 2026.
Featuring a 50-strong company of dancers, this brand-new South African staging boasts choreography and stage direction by Georgian-born, London-based former English National Ballet principal ballerina Elena Glurjidze. The visual aesthetic is brought to life by Naledi Award-nominated creative duo Marcel Meyer (costume design) and Michael Mitchell (set design).
A Timeless Tale of Love, Betrayal, and Sorcery
Set to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s immortal and dramatic score, Swan Lake tells the heartbreaking story of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette, who is trapped under a curse by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart that forces her to live as a swan by day.
Audiences can expect a display of athletic precision and expressive storytelling, from the iconic Act II corps de ballet Dance of the Little Swans to the demanding dual portrayal of Odette (the White Swan) and Odile (the Black Swan).
