The Springboks know they cannot afford to be complacent when they face the All Blacks in the opening Test of their highly anticipated series at Ellis Park.
South Africa famously dismantled New Zealand 43-10 in Wellington last year, but coach Rassie Erasmus believes this is a very different All Blacks team under new head coach Dave Rennie and his coaching staff.
All Blacks returning to their traditional strengths
According to Erasmus, New Zealand are showing a clear emphasis on the qualities traditionally associated with their rugby.
The All Blacks are expected to bring a high-tempo attacking game, using multiple phases, rapid ball movement and greater distribution between forwards and backs.
Their work at the breakdown is another major concern for the Springboks, with New Zealand looking to win quick ball and maintain pressure through successive phases.
Erasmus believes the All Blacks’ attacking kicking game could be just as dangerous as their running rugby.
“What concerns us most is how physical and brutal they are at the breakdown.”
The Springboks coach also highlighted New Zealand’s ability to patiently build attacks before suddenly using a well-timed grubber or attacking kick to change the picture.
Rassie expecting surprises
Erasmus also expects the All Blacks to have a few tactical surprises in store.
He pointed to potential lineout variations and set-piece movements that may not have been shown during the Nations Championship.
That element of unpredictability could make Saturday’s Test particularly challenging.
The Springboks know they will have periods of control when they have possession, but Erasmus believes the key battle will be what happens when New Zealand have the ball.
Kolisi and Nche remain injury doubts
Erasmus also provided an update on the Springboks’ injury situation.
Siya Kolisi and Ox Nche remain the only doubts in the squad, although both players are reportedly progressing well.
Neither has been completely ruled out, with their availability expected to become clearer following training.
The rest of the Springbok squad is available for selection.
New Zealand have their own injury concerns, with prop Ollie Norris ruled out of the tour. Damian McKenzie, Will Jordan and Cam Roigard are also carrying injuries.
All eyes on Ellis Park
The Springboks will announce their matchday squad on Thursday, with Saturday’s blockbuster kicking off at 17:10 at Ellis Park.
Last year’s 43-10 victory will be firmly in the history books, but Erasmus knows the Springboks will face a rejuvenated All Blacks side determined to make a statement.
Will the Boks handle New Zealand’s high-tempo attack?
