Thembinkosi Lorch has been linked with Kaizer Chiefs. Here's how a potential return to the PSL could transform Amakhosi's attack and affect their young stars.

Kaizer Chiefs could be lining up a major transfer coup, with Thembinkosi Lorch reportedly emerging as a potential target for the Soweto giants.

The prospect of Lorch returning to South African football — and potentially joining Chiefs — would send shockwaves through the Premier Soccer League.

The 33-year-old attacker remains one of the country’s most recognisable footballers, despite spending more than two years away from the domestic game.

Lorch moved to Libyan side Al Ittihad Tripoli in January 2026, signing a long-term contract after being reunited with former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena.

However, Mokwena’s recent departure for Egyptian club Pyramids FC has raised questions about what could be next for the experienced attacker.

Could Lorch really join Kaizer Chiefs?

Recent reports have fuelled speculation that Chiefs could be exploring a deal for Lorch, with the forward reportedly having been around the Amakhosi setup in recent days.

If Chiefs were able to complete the signing, it would represent a major statement from the Soweto club.

Lorch has famously been a thorn in Chiefs’ side over the years, particularly in the Soweto Derby. His goals and performances against Amakhosi have made him a familiar source of frustration for their supporters.

A move to Naturena would also make Lorch one of the rare players to have represented Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs — South Africa’s three biggest clubs.

Lorch could transform Chiefs’ attack

From a football perspective, Lorch would offer Chiefs something different.

His experience, creativity, ability to operate in attacking areas and knack for producing decisive moments could add another dimension to Nasreddine Nabi’s team.

But his arrival would also create a selection dilemma.

Young attackers such as Mduduzi Shabalala and Wandile Duba could face increased competition for starting places. While that could make opportunities harder to come by, it could also raise the overall level of competition within the squad.

For Chiefs, therefore, a potential Lorch deal would be about more than simply adding another attacker.

It would be a statement of intent — and potentially one of the club’s most eye-catching transfers in recent years.
