Thapelo Maseko’s move from Mamelodi Sundowns to FC Copenhagen could reportedly be worth less than initially expected, with a Danish publication putting the upfront fee at around €800,000.
The 22-year-old Bafana Bafana winger has completed his move to the Danish giants, signing a long-term contract that will keep him at the club until 2030.
Maseko’s reported transfer fee
According to Danish publication Bold, FC Copenhagen agreed an initial transfer fee of approximately €800,000 (around R15 million) with Sundowns for Maseko.
That figure is notably below earlier reports in South Africa, which suggested the overall package could be worth approximately €1.5 million (around R28 million).
The final value of the deal could still rise if performance-related bonuses and other conditions are triggered.
Maseko’s move represents another major step in a rapidly developing career that has taken him from SuperSport United to Sundowns and now European football.
FC Copenhagen excited by Maseko’s potential
FC Copenhagen see the South African winger as an exciting addition to their attacking options.
The club’s director of football, Kristjaan Speakman, highlighted Maseko’s versatility, while head coach Bo Svensson praised his pace, explosiveness and ability to take defenders on in one-on-one situations.
Maseko is capable of operating on either flank and is particularly dangerous when attacking space with or without the ball.
The move also has a South African connection, with Maseko following in the footsteps of Sibusiso Zuma, who became a fan favourite during his time in Copenhagen.
From Sundowns to Europe
Maseko began his professional career at SuperSport United, breaking into the senior side during the 2021/22 season before enjoying a breakthrough campaign the following year.
His performances earned him a move to Sundowns in 2023, where he continued his development and gained valuable experience at one of Africa’s biggest clubs.
He also established himself in the Bafana Bafana setup, culminating in a memorable appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he scored the winning goal against South Korea.
Now, the talented winger has taken the next step.
From Chloorkop to Copenhagen, Maseko’s European adventure is officially underway — and Sundowns could ultimately receive even more than the reported €800,000 depending on how the deal develops.
