Kaizer Chiefs may have added another option to their midfield, but Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko’s arrival has raised questions over whether the club has addressed an actual weakness in the squad.
The Tanzanian vice-captain has joined Chiefs as a defensive midfielder, bringing a more specialised profile to Fernando Da Cruz’s squad. However, with the coach already having established midfield options capable of contributing both defensively and creatively, there is an argument that the club could have used its resources elsewhere.
Does Bitegeko solve a problem for Chiefs?
The modern central midfielder is increasingly expected to influence both ends of the pitch.
While specialist defensive midfielders still have an important role, versatility has become particularly valuable in systems that demand players to contribute during transitions and in the final third.
Bitegeko’s strengths appear to lie primarily in his defensive work. The concern for Chiefs, however, is whether he offers enough creativity and attacking influence to force his way into a midfield that is already functioning effectively.
That could make his route into the starting XI particularly difficult.
Maboe and Ndlovu already have the midfield balance
Lebohang Maboe has emerged as an important figure for Chiefs this season.
The experienced midfielder has contributed with goals and assists while also helping dictate the tempo of matches. His ability to pick passes and influence attacking moves has made him a key component of Da Cruz’s midfield.
Alongside him, Siphesihle Ndlovu provides energy, mobility and the ability to move forward when opportunities arise.
The combination gives Chiefs a midfield pairing that offers both industry and creativity — precisely the qualities Bitegeko may struggle to replicate.
Where does that leave Bitegeko?
At 27, Bitegeko is entering a stage of his career where regular first-team football is important.
Yet breaking into the Chiefs midfield will not be straightforward if Da Cruz continues to favour Maboe and Ndlovu.
That does not necessarily mean the Tanzanian international is a poor signing. Squad depth matters, particularly over a long season involving multiple competitions.
However, if Chiefs were looking for a midfielder who could immediately transform their starting XI, Bitegeko may not be the obvious answer.
His value could instead come through rotation, defensive protection and providing the coach with a different tactical option when matches require a more conservative approach.
Chiefs may need more attacking depth
The bigger question is whether the club should have prioritised a more dynamic midfielder — someone capable of winning the ball while also contributing consistently in the final third.
Da Cruz’s 3-4-3 system places significant demands on the central midfielders. They must cover ground, help build attacks and provide defensive protection when possession is lost.
Maboe and Ndlovu currently appear to offer that balance.
Unless Bitegeko can demonstrate that he has more attacking range than his specialist defensive-midfielder profile suggests, he may have to wait for his opportunity.
The verdict
Bitegeko could still prove to be a useful addition to the Chiefs squad, but his arrival raises a legitimate recruitment question.
Did Kaizer Chiefs need another defensive midfielder, or should they have targeted a more creative all-rounder?
The answer may ultimately depend on how Da Cruz plans to develop his midfield and whether Bitegeko can adapt his game to meet the demands of the system.
For now, the Tanzanian midfielder faces a significant challenge: displacing a partnership that already appears to give Chiefs the balance their coach wants.
