Orlando Pirates could be forced to enter the transfer market for a new right-back after a series of departures left head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou with limited options in the position.
The Buccaneers recently lost Deano Van Rooyen, while Thabiso Lebitso and Bandile Shandu have also moved on. That leaves Kamogelo Sebelebele as the club’s only recognised right-back, a situation Ouaddou has admitted could become difficult to manage over a demanding season.
With Pirates potentially facing around 60 matches across all competitions, relying on one natural right-back could be a major risk.
One player who could provide a solution is AmaZulu defender Nkosikhona Radebe.
Radebe emerging as a potential Pirates target
The 25-year-old right-back has steadily established himself as one of the more promising full-backs in the Betway Premiership.
Born in Durban and developed through the KZN Football Academy, Radebe spent three-and-a-half seasons with TS Galaxy before joining AmaZulu in early 2025.
Since moving to Usuthu, his profile has continued to rise. He has developed into a regular starter and has shown that he can contribute at both ends of the pitch.
His performances this season have been particularly eye-catching.
Radebe has recorded one goal and three assists in seven matches, while completing more than 115 passes at a 73.7% accuracy rate. He has also created five key chances for his teammates.
Those numbers suggest that Radebe is not simply a defensive full-back. He can provide an attacking outlet and contribute to the build-up in the final third.
Strong defensive numbers
Radebe’s defensive statistics are equally encouraging.
Against Orlando Pirates, he produced a particularly impressive performance, recording a 100% tackle success rate, five interceptions and 13 ball recoveries.
His ability to win possession and immediately transition from defence into attack could make him an attractive option for Pirates.
The defender has also earned recognition through impressive player ratings and Man of the Match performances, including in important Nedbank Cup fixtures.
At international level, Radebe has represented South Africa at both Under-20 and Under-23 level, giving him further experience within the national football setup.
Why Radebe could suit Ouaddou
One of Radebe’s biggest strengths is his versatility.
While right-back is his natural position, he can also operate further forward as a right midfielder. That flexibility could be particularly valuable for Ouaddou as Pirates navigate a congested fixture schedule.
His pace, stamina, ability to carry the ball and willingness to push into attacking areas fit the profile of the modern full-back.
Radebe also appears to have a strong appetite for improvement. He has been known to analyse his own performances and put in extra work to improve areas such as positioning and decision-making.
For Pirates, that combination of current Betway Premiership experience, versatility and potential makes him an intriguing option.
Could Orlando Pirates make a move?
Pirates clearly need greater depth at right-back, and Radebe could represent a realistic domestic option.
The Buccaneers would, however, have to assess whether AmaZulu would be willing to part with one of their important players and whether the financial terms would make sense.
From a football perspective, though, the fit is worth considering.
Radebe is young enough to continue developing, experienced enough to contribute immediately and versatile enough to provide Ouaddou with another tactical option.
