Eastern Cape hip-hop is gearing up for a lyrical showdown with KwaZulu-Natal, and veteran rapper iFani is making sure the province is represented by its strongest MCs.
The Gqeberha-born rapper has issued a final call for Eastern Cape rappers to put their names forward as he works to complete the province’s lineup for an upcoming EC vs KZN Cypher.
iFani Wants the Hottest MCs
The “Shake” hitmaker has already selected 15 rappers from names suggested by fans in the comments, but five more MCs are still needed to complete the Eastern Cape team.
However, iFani has made it clear that simply being well-known will not guarantee a place. His priority is finding rappers who can genuinely deliver when the pressure is on.
“Give me the HOTTEST, not just lo umaziyo. Sifuna oyena untswembu,” iFani said.
That message puts the emphasis firmly on lyrical ability, originality and performance rather than popularity alone.
The planned cypher is expected to bring together established, underground and emerging MCs, giving artists from the Eastern Cape an opportunity to represent their province through their bars.
Ma-Air Sets the Tone
The build-up has already gained momentum following the release of Ma-Air’s freestyle, which iFani introduced as the official warm-up track after fans called for it.
The contribution has attracted attention for its Xhosa-rooted spaza rap influence, adding a strong Eastern Cape identity to the growing provincial rivalry.
With the final spots still available, rappers from the province now have one last opportunity to make their case and convince iFani that they belong in the lineup.
Eastern Cape vs KwaZulu-Natal
The cypher is not simply another rap showcase. It carries an added element of provincial pride, with Eastern Cape MCs preparing to go up against rappers representing KwaZulu-Natal.
iFani has already injected some competitive energy into the matchup, making it clear that the Eastern Cape intends to fight for bragging rights when the lyrical battle begins.
“asinobethwa ngamaZulu kodwa noba sekuthiwani. Not kwi Rap,” he wrote.
The involvement of TruFM as a media partner and Nasty Energy Drink as a backer could also help take the contest beyond the local hip-hop scene and expose the participating artists to a wider audience.
