Zimbabwean striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya is on the verge of writing his name into the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) record books.
The AmaZulu forward has scored in seven consecutive Betway Premiership matches, matching a record achieved by only two other players during the PSL era.
Ngwenya reached the milestone on Saturday when his goal earned AmaZulu a 1-0 victory over Polokwane City, extending his remarkable scoring streak.
Ngwenya joins exclusive PSL company
According to OptaJabu, Ngwenya has now matched the seven-match scoring streaks previously recorded by Grant Young of Hellenic in 1999 and former Zimbabwe international Esau Kanyenda of Jomo Cosmos in 2002.
More than 20 years after Kanyenda achieved the feat, Ngwenya has put himself within touching distance of a new PSL record.
The 23-year-old needs just one more goal in his next league appearance to score in eight consecutive matches and establish the longest scoring streak in PSL league history.
Eight goals in seven league matches
Ngwenya’s numbers are even more impressive because he has found the net eight times during the streak.
The Zimbabwe international has scored in every league match AmaZulu have played this season, including scoring twice in one of those games.
His latest goal against Polokwane City was enough to settle the contest and helped AmaZulu secure another three points.
The run has made Ngwenya one of the standout attacking players at the start of the Betway Premiership campaign.
History awaits
Ngwenya is currently on national duty in Morocco, but attention will soon turn to his next appearance for AmaZulu.
Another goal would take him beyond the seven-match mark shared by Young and Kanyenda and give him the longest consecutive scoring run in PSL league history.
For now, the Zimbabwean striker has already equalled a record that has stood since 2002.
One more goal could make Ngwenya the sole holder of the PSL’s consecutive scoring-match record.
