Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopi Motsepe explains the club’s 2024 decision to part ways with Rulani Mokwena and praises the coach’s development since leaving.

Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopane “Tlhopi” Motsepe has opened up about the club’s decision to part ways with Rulani Mokwena in 2024, saying the move was considered necessary as Sundowns continued their pursuit of CAF Champions League success.

Mokwena left Sundowns after a period in which the club enjoyed significant domestic success but continued to chase continental glory.

Speaking to Robert Marawa, Motsepe said he believes the former Sundowns coach gained valuable experience during his time at the club and has continued to apply those lessons throughout his coaching career.

Motsepe backs Mokwena’s coaching journey

Mokwena subsequently took charge of Wydad Athletic Club before moving to MC Alger, with Motsepe suggesting that each chapter of his career has added to his experience.

“It was [the right decision to let go of Rulani at the time], I think in hindsight, when coach Rulani went Wydad, he had lessons that he had learned at Sundowns that he takes there,” Motsepe said.

“When he goes to MC Alger, he had lessons he learned from Pirates, Sundowns and Wydad and he took them there.”

Motsepe also offered praise for Mokwena’s progress, saying he hopes the coach continues to succeed during his career.

“I’m sure he’s going to be successful there. He seems to have gotten off to a good start, and congratulations to him.”

Sundowns’ Champions League ambitions remain central

For Sundowns, the CAF Champions League has remained a major objective, adding context to Motsepe’s comments about the club’s decision-making.

Motsepe said Sundowns want to see South African coaches succeed on the continent, although he made it clear that his preference changes when those coaches come up against Sundowns in the Champions League.

“And again, we say, we want them to be successful as South African coaches, just not against Sundowns in the Champions League,” he added.

Sundowns have since gone on to win the CAF Champions League, defeating AS FAR Rabat 2-1 on aggregate to claim the continental title.

Mokwena’s departure therefore remains part of a wider conversation around Sundowns’ coaching decisions, their continental ambitions and the development of South African coaches working abroad.
