Money Badoo is set to give viewers a more personal look at her life when her episode of The Next Verse Season 1 airs this Saturday at 19:00 on DStv Channel 163 and Wethu+.

Known for her genre-blending music and multidisciplinary creative work, the South African rapper and songwriter will use the episode to explore the family history, places and relationships that have helped shape her identity.

A journey back to her family’s roots

The upcoming episode takes Money Badoo beyond her career and into the story behind the artist.

The Ennerdale-raised creative is joined by her mother and 96-year-old great-grandmother as they revisit Eldorado Park, the Johannesburg township where both of her parents grew up.

The trip creates an opportunity for Money Badoo to reconnect with a part of her family history that has influenced her journey, while also highlighting the women whose experiences form part of her story.

The rapper has teased an emotional exploration of identity, creativity and heritage without revealing too much about what viewers can expect.

“Versions of us exist in each other,” Money Badoo wrote while announcing her appearance on the programme.

From church choirs to a genre-blending artist

Money Badoo’s creative journey began when she was just 12 years old, singing in church choirs.

She later discovered poetry before moving into rap, initially recording over beats she found on YouTube.

That early experimentation eventually developed into a sound that crosses several genres, including hip-hop, trap, R&B, alternative music and Afropop.

Her ability to move between styles has become an important part of her artistic identity.

A career beyond music

Money Badoo’s creative work extends beyond recording and performing.

Her catalogue includes the 2019 single “All My Friends” as well as projects such as PORN$TAR, M$RYLUV$CMPNY and 4PLAY.

She has also worked across fashion and visual arts as a stylist, photographer and visual artist.

Her television appearances have added another dimension to her public profile, including her participation in Love & Hip Hop: South Africa.

Taking her music beyond South Africa

Money Badoo’s career has also taken her outside the country.

The artist has performed internationally, including appearances in Germany where she has played sold-out shows.

Despite the international exposure, her upcoming The Next Verse episode brings the focus back to the people and places that helped shape her.

That connection between personal history and artistic expression appears to be at the centre of the episode.

Money Badoo’s story beyond the spotlight

The Next Verse follows five South African creatives and gives audiences an opportunity to see the people and experiences behind their public careers.

For Money Badoo, that means revisiting her family’s past and reflecting on how those roots continue to influence the person and artist she has become.

She has also thanked the fans who have supported her throughout her journey.

Viewers can discover the full story when Money Badoo’s episode airs this Saturday at 19:00 on DStv Channel 163 and Wethu+.
