The Bulls have made another major statement of intent by securing the services of Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx on a long-term contract beginning in July 2027.
The Pretoria-based franchise has confirmed the signing of the World Rugby Player of the Year as it continues assembling a squad capable of challenging for major silverware.
Marx, a two-time Rugby World Cup winner, will bring immense experience, leadership and world-class ability to Loftus Versfeld when he makes the move.
His arrival follows the Bulls’ recent recruitment activity, which has included the signing of Springbok World Cup winner Kwagga Smith on a three-year deal.
Malcolm Marx makes Bulls move official
The 32-year-old Marx is among the most accomplished forwards in South African rugby.
He has represented the Springboks on 94 occasions, scoring 29 Test tries — a remarkable record for a forward.
A key member of South Africa’s 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup-winning teams, Marx has built a reputation as one of the most influential hookers in world rugby.
After spending the past six years playing his franchise rugby in Japan, he is now preparing for a return to South African domestic rugby.
Marx said he was grateful for the opportunity to join a club with the history and reputation of the Bulls. He also expressed excitement about reuniting with familiar teammates and coaches while helping the Pretoria side achieve its ambitions.
Johan Ackermann welcomes reunion with former player
Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann will be particularly pleased to have Marx on board.
The pair previously worked together during their time with the Lions, who reached three consecutive Super Rugby finals in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Ackermann recalled first meeting Marx when the hooker was still a schoolboy at King Edward VII School.
The coach praised his former player’s work ethic, humility and integrity, describing him as someone who consistently puts the team first.
For Ackermann, the signing is also a personal reunion with a player whose development he has followed closely.
Their previous working relationship could prove valuable as the Bulls look to build a strong team culture and compete for trophies.
Bulls continue building a title-winning squad
Marx’s arrival is another indication of the Bulls’ ambitions under Ackermann.
The franchise has already strengthened its forward resources with the addition of Kwagga Smith, while the recruitment of Marx adds further international quality and experience.
Blue Bulls Company CEO Edgar Rathbone described the signing as a significant moment for the union.
He praised Marx’s achievements, winning mentality and influence, adding that the Bulls want to build a squad capable of competing for the biggest honours.
The signing is therefore about more than adding another Springbok to the team. Marx’s experience and leadership could help raise standards across the squad, particularly among younger players.
Can Malcolm Marx help the Bulls win more silverware?
Bulls supporters will be excited by the prospect of seeing one of the world’s leading hookers wearing their colours.
Marx brings a powerful combination of physicality, set-piece ability, defensive strength and experience at the highest level.
His arrival in July 2027 gives the Bulls another major weapon as they continue shaping their squad for the seasons ahead.
With Ackermann at the helm and more high-profile signings coming through the door, expectations in Pretoria will continue to rise.
