Orlando Pirates delivered a masterclass in clinical cup football this afternoon, brushing aside Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) with a dominant 4-1 victory at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. The win ensures the Buccaneers’ safe passage into the Nedbank Cup Round of 16, keeping their dreams of a domestic trophy sweep very much alive.
A Tale of Two Halves
The Early Blitz
The Buccaneers wasted no time asserting their authority. Just 10 minutes into the encounter, Pirates were awarded a penalty after a clumsy challenge in the box. New Zealand playmaker Andre de Jong stepped up with icy composure, slotting the ball home to give the visitors an early lead.
The momentum stayed firmly with the Sea Robbers. In the 17th minute, the “Midfield General” Thalente Mbatha doubled the advantage with a thunderous strike that left the TTM keeper rooted to the spot, making it 2-0 before the twenty-minute mark.
TTM Strikes Back
To their credit, TTM refused to fold. The Vhembe-based side found a lifeline in the 39th minute when Ngobe pounced on a defensive lapse to pull one back. The goal injected life into the home side, and the teams headed into the tunnel at halftime with the scoreline balanced at 2-1.
Closing the Gates
Any hopes of a TTM comeback were swiftly extinguished after the break. In the 50th minute, the fan-favorite Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi showcased his individual brilliance, weaving through the defense to restore the two-goal cushion.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, second-half substitute Siphelo Mbule added the exclamation point, finishing off a slick team move to make it 4-1 and seal the rout.
Man of the Match: Thalente Mbatha
The Man of the Match award was deservingly handed to Thalente Mbatha. Not only did he score the crucial second goal, but his work rate and ability to dictate the tempo of the game ensured Pirates controlled the midfield from start to finish.
