Round 7 of the Varsity Cup delivered a Monday night for the history books. From heart-stopping comebacks to the crushing reality of relegation, the final standings are locked in. While the NWU Eagles staged a heist in Potchefstroom, the CUT Ixias saw their top-flight dreams disappear in Bloemfontein.
Here is how the dramatic final round unfolded:
1. The Great Escape: NWU Eagles 56-53 UCT Ikeys
In what will be remembered as the comeback of the season, the NWU Eagles overturned a massive 39-20 halftime deficit to stun the defending champions.
The Ikey Tigers dominated the first forty minutes, scoring at will and appearing to cruise toward a victory. However, spurred on by a deafening Potchefstroom crowd, the “Purple Army” struck back immediately after the break. A brace from MJ Mostert and a relentless team effort saw the Eagles snatch a three-point lead in the dying moments.
- The Result: NWU secures a vital home semi-final.
- The Heartbreak: UCT Ikeys are officially knocked out of title contention.
2. Relegation Heartbreak: CUT Ixias 23-45 Maties
The “Maroon Machine” marched into the playoffs with clinical precision, but their victory came at a heavy price for the hosts. CJ Erasmus was the undisputed star for Maties, crossing the white line three times for a powerhouse hat-trick.
Despite a spirited fightback from the Ixias in the first half—led by tries from Malothane and Vergotine—the Maties’ depth proved too much.
- The Fallout: The defeat confirms CUT Ixias’ automatic relegation to the Varsity Shield for 2027 after a winless campaign.
3. Dominance at the Top: UJ 22-51 UP-Tuks
Log-leaders UP-Tuks sent a clear message to the rest of the field with a 51-22 dismantling of UJ. Despite an early scare from the hosts, Tuks’ tactical discipline and explosive finishing (including a standout performance by Divan du Toit) ensured they finished the regular season at the summit.
- Silver Lining: Despite the heavy loss, UJ clings to the fourth and final semi-final spot thanks to results elsewhere.
4. Finishing Strong: Emeris 41-19 UFS Shimlas
The Emeris ended their season on a high, thrilling home fans with a dominant 41-19 victory over the Shimlas. The match featured a contender for “Try of the Season” by Edward Sigauke, who chased down a deep kick and used exquisite footwork to dot down a Point of Origin (POR) try at the death.
