The URC and Stormers prepare to honor the memory of legendary team manager Christopher ‘Chippie’ Solomon this weekend following his passing after 21 seasons of service.

The South African rugby community is in mourning following the tragic passing of Christopher ‘Chippie’ Solomon, the legendary Stormers team manager who served the union with distinction for over two decades. In a tribute to his immense legacy, the United Rugby Championship (URC) has announced widespread honors to take place across this weekend’s fixtures.

A Pillar of Western Cape Rugby

“Uncle Chippie,” as he was affectionately known, was far more than a manager; he was a cornerstone of the Stormers’ identity. Since 2004, Solomon oversaw more than 350 matches, providing a constant, guiding presence on the touchline through 21 seasons of highs and lows.

Beyond his professional duties, he was revered as a father figure to generations of players, offering mentorship and support that extended far beyond the rugby pitch.

Tributes Planned for Saturday

This weekend, the “Stormers Faithful” will have the opportunity to say a formal goodbye during the home clash against Connacht at the Cape Town Stadium. The URC confirmed that various acts of tribute are planned to celebrate a man defined by his boundless energy and selfless work ethic.

In an emotional statement, the URC shared its condolences:

“We hope [his family] will always find consolation in the impact Chippie made on so many people across so many places.”

“Nullis Secundis”: Second to None

Stormers Director of Rugby, John Dobson, expressed the collective heartbreak at the High Performance Centre, describing Solomon as a “remarkable man” who represented the region with consummate professionalism.

“This is devastating news… Chippie was so much more than just a Team Manager. He will be remembered as a true rugby man, but more importantly as someone who was fiercely loyal. Chippie was ‘nullis secundis’ [second to none].”

Solomon is survived by his wife, Pearl, and his children, Nina and Chad. His passing leaves a significant void in the heart of South African rugby, but his influence on the “vibrant personality” of the Stormers will undoubtedly live on.
