South African media powerhouse, TV presenter, and executive producer Minnie Dlamini has completely melted the hearts of her followers after sharing a nostalgic, rare look into her upbringing. Fresh off celebrating her milestone 36th birthday this July, the star dropped a beautiful 30-year-old throwback photo of herself at just six years old, opening up about the unique maternal influences that ignited her lifelong passion for culture and media.
The image captures a young Minnie long before she ever encountered a professional television camera, but as she reveals, the creative spark was already heavily at play.
Closets, Church, and Creative Freedom
Reflecting on the picture, Minnie shared a humorous yet deeply telling memory regarding how her mother allowed her to express her individuality, long before her son Netha reached the very same age milestone.
“30 years ago. I’m only a few months older here than my son is now, and I remember this little girl so vividly,” Minnie penned. “What you can’t see is that l’d taken one of my mom’s sheer scarves and wrapped it around my legs. She let me experiment in her closet as much as I wanted, as long as I agreed to wear whatever she chose for church on Sunday. So, every other day, I got to be exactly who l wanted to be. Fair deal.”
A Masterclass in Zulu Culture and Storytelling
Beyond the fashion experimentation, Minnie detailed that the photo shoot itself carried an immense academic and cultural weight. Her mother was actively compiling a university thesis on traditional Zulu garments, an assignment that fundamentally altered how Minnie viewed identity.
- The Inspiration: “These images were taken while my mom was doing a university project on traditional Zulu attire, what it represents, when it’s worn, and how it reflects the different stages of our lives. I remember the books, the stories, and the pride I felt learning about our culture through her eyes.”
- The Emotional Edit: Minnie touchingly admitted to cropping her late younger brother out of the specific frame for privacy, noting that her mother made them pose for portraits directly after her own academic shoot wrapped. “The level this woman would take her assignments to inspired a desire to overachieve, that has never quite left me.”
“Certified Grown Woman” — Betting on Herself at 36
The sentimental look back follows Minnie’s recent vibrant birthday celebrations, where she officially declared herself a graduate of the youth league and ready to claim her true power as an industry matriarch.
“Chapter 36. Officially out of the youth league. I’m now a certified grown woman,” she wrote boldly. “And somehow… I feel younger, hotter, more powerful and more myself than ever. This year, I made one of the wildest decisions of my life. It didn’t make sense to everyone, but it made sense to me. Because one thing I’ve learned in 36 years is this: I will always bet on myself. Every single time.”
