GQEBERHA, EASTERN CAPE — In a landmark move for South African higher education, Nelson Mandela University (NMU) has officially appointed Dr. Grace Naledi Mandisa Pandor as its next Chancellor.
The announcement, made on January 8, 2026, marks the beginning of a four-year term for the distinguished academic and former Cabinet Minister, starting 1 April 2026. Dr. Pandor succeeds Dr. Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, whose successful two-term tenure concludes at the end of March.
A Legacy of Leadership and Social Justice
The appointment was confirmed by the Chairperson of the University Council, Judge Nambitha Dambuza, who emphasized that Dr. Pandor’s selection was a natural fit for the institution’s ethos.
“Dr. Pandor is a distinguished activist, academic, and former senior Cabinet minister whose lifelong commitment to education and social justice fits deeply with the values of the university,” said Dambuza. “Her appointment reflects Council’s confidence in her ability to provide principled leadership and serve as an inspiring ambassador for the institution.”
From Cabinet to Chancellery: A Stellar Profile
Dr. Pandor is one of South Africa’s most respected public figures, having served in multiple high-profile government roles, including:
- Minister of International Relations and Cooperation
- Minister of Higher Education and Training
- Minister of Science and Technology
- Minister of Education
An academic at heart, she earned her PhD in Education from the University of Pretoria in 2019 and holds multiple honorary doctorates from prestigious institutions in South Africa, Portugal, and Ireland. Her deep-rooted belief that “education provides true personal liberation” aligns perfectly with NMU’s mission to be a catalyst for social change.
The Role of the Chancellor
While the position of Chancellor at Nelson Mandela University is primarily ceremonial, it is a vital figurehead role. As the titular head of the university, Dr. Pandor will:
- Confer degrees in the name of the University during graduation ceremonies.
- Serve as a global ambassador, elevating the university’s profile locally and internationally.
- Champion the institution’s commitment to equality, leadership, and academic excellence.
Nelson Mandela University, based in Gqeberha, currently serves approximately 27,000 students across seven campuses, including George. With Dr. Pandor at the helm, the institution is poised to strengthen its global partnerships and continue its legacy of producing socially responsible graduates.
