Are you a publisher with a standout title from 2025? The University of Johannesburg is looking for creative fiction and non-fiction that demonstrates exceptional literary merit. This prize is a unique platform that bridges the gap between commercial success and academic recognition.
The Prize Categories & Purses
The awards are split into two distinct categories to ensure both established and new authors have a stage to shine:
- The Main Prize (R75,000): Awarded to the best South African book published in English, regardless of the author’s previous work.
- The Debut Prize (R45,000): Designed specifically to encourage and reward first-time authors who have made a significant impact with their first published work.
Who is Eligible?
The UJ Prize maintains a strict “South African focus.” To qualify:
- Authorship: Must be a South African citizen OR a foreign national who resided in South Africa for at least six months while writing the book.
- Publication Date: The book must have been published between January 1 and December 31, 2025.
- Genres: The prize is “genre-blind,” accepting novels, short story collections, poetry, biographies, and creative non-fiction.
Exclusions: Please note that self-published books, unpublished manuscripts, and translations (unless translated by the author themselves) are not eligible for entry.
