The high-stakes defamation battle between Grammy-winning DJ Black Coffee and controversial media executive Nota Baloyi has reached a boiling point, with reports emerging that the DJ is now pushing for Baloyi to serve prison time.
Following a High Court ruling in December 2025, which ordered Baloyi to delete defamatory posts regarding the DJ and issue a formal apology, the dispute has taken a dramatic turn. According to recent reports, Black Coffee is seeking a 60-day jail sentence for Baloyi, alleging he has willfully defied the court’s directive.
Defiance and Counterclaims
Instead of complying with the High Court order, Baloyi has launched a vigorous defense, filing an appeal against the ruling. He argues that the court’s decision violates his constitutional right to freedom of expression.
“The case is not about defamation but an attempt to muzzle public discourse on issues that affect society,” Baloyi reportedly stated in court papers.
Furthermore, Baloyi has filed a counterclaim against Black Coffee, accusing the international superstar of using his immense wealth and influence to silence critics. He is seeking R25,000 in damages, citing emotional distress caused to his mother due to the ongoing litigation.
A Focus on Accountability
For Black Coffee, the move to seek imprisonment is reportedly centered on the principle of judicial accountability. The DJ maintains that ignoring a High Court order undermines the authority of the judiciary and requires legal consequences.
This is not the first time Baloyi has faced potential jail time over social media commentary. In November 2024, he served two weeks of a 60-day sentence for contempt of court in a separate matter involving rapper K.O.
