AmaZulu FC head coach Arthur Zwane is reportedly being considered for a role in Pitso Mosimane’s revamped Bafana Bafana technical structure.
The former Kaizer Chiefs coach could become part of the national team setup without leaving his position at AmaZulu, in what would be an unusual arrangement for South African football.
Zwane has not yet been officially appointed, with discussions around his proposed contract and responsibilities still being finalised.
Zwane could combine AmaZulu and Bafana duties
Under the reported plan, Zwane would remain fully committed to his work at AmaZulu FC, while taking on part-time responsibilities within the national-team structure.
His proposed role would focus heavily on South Africa’s youth pipeline.
In particular, Zwane could be tasked with monitoring the Under-23 national team, while also keeping a close eye on emerging players performing in the domestic league.
The objective would be to identify talent capable of making the step up to senior international football.
Why SAFA is considering Zwane
Zwane has built a reputation for working with and developing young players, while his extensive experience in South African football gives him valuable knowledge of the domestic talent pool.
That could make him an important link between the country’s junior national teams, the PSL and Mosimane’s senior Bafana Bafana squad.
Rather than taking Zwane away from AmaZulu, the proposed structure would allow SAFA to make use of his local expertise while he continues leading Usuthu.
The final technical-team structure is still expected to be confirmed by SAFA.
Mosimane begins a new Bafana Bafana era
The potential addition of Zwane comes shortly after SAFA appointed Pitso Mosimane as Bafana Bafana head coach, replacing Hugo Broos.
Mosimane has already begun shaping his backroom team, bringing in long-time associates Musi Matlaba and Kabelo Rangoaga, while Morena Ramoreboli has taken up the first assistant coach position.
The possible inclusion of Zwane would add another layer of South African football expertise to the new setup.
Bafana Bafana face busy start under Mosimane
Mosimane’s first competitive assignments will come in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Bafana Bafana are scheduled to open their qualifying campaign against Guinea on Saturday, 26 September 2026, at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, with kick-off at 15:00 SAST.
South Africa will then travel to Cairo to face Eritrea on Wednesday, 30 September, with the match scheduled for 18:00 SAST at Al-Salam Stadium.
The team will remain in Egypt before taking on the hosts in an international friendly at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, 4 October, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00.
A new pathway for South Africa’s young stars?
If the proposed arrangement is finalised, Zwane could become a key figure in identifying and developing the players who will eventually form the next generation of Bafana Bafana.
For Mosimane, having someone with detailed knowledge of South Africa’s emerging talent could prove valuable as he begins building a new national-team era.
For now, however, Zwane’s involvement remains a reported possibility rather than a confirmed appointment, with SAFA still expected to finalise the technical structure.
