Oswin Appollis continued his impressive run for Bafana Bafana by producing a standout creative display in South Africa’s 5-0 victory over Eritrea.
The Orlando Pirates winger was directly involved in three goals as Bafana made it two wins from two in their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.
Appollis delivers another assist masterclass
Appollis provided three assists during the emphatic victory, once again demonstrating his value as one of South Africa’s key attacking creators.
The performance also saw him match a personal piece of Bafana history.
According to the supplied statistics, Appollis previously recorded three assists in a single international match against Congo in 2024.
His latest display against Eritrea therefore saw the Pirates star replicate the feat on the international stage.
Appollis has increasingly become an important creative outlet for Bafana, with his ability to create opportunities adding another dimension to South Africa’s attack.
His performance was particularly significant in a match where Relebohile Mofokeng scored twice, while Sphephelo Sithole, Iqraam Rayners and Luther Singh also found the net.
Bafana make perfect start under Mosimane
The Eritrea victory gave Pitso Mosimane two wins from his opening two AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
Bafana previously defeated Guinea 2-1 before producing an even more convincing performance against Eritrea in Cairo.
Their next assignment will be a friendly against Egypt on Sunday, 4 October, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00.
The match will provide Mosimane with another opportunity to assess his squad and combinations ahead of the next phase of AFCON qualifying.
Aubaas suffers early injury setback
Bathusi Aubaas was handed a starting role against Eritrea but was forced off after just 12 minutes with an injury.
The 31-year-old had made three Betway Premiership appearances this season and recorded one assist before joining up with the national team.
His early departure adds another midfield concern for Mosimane, particularly with several other central midfield options already unavailable.
Pirates return to MTN8 final action
Appollis will now turn his attention back to club football with Orlando Pirates.
The defending Betway Premiership champions are scheduled to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final on Saturday, 10 October, with kick-off at 15:00.
After his latest international performance, Appollis will head into the showpiece with his confidence high as Pirates prepare for another major domestic test.
