Stogie T draws on the biblical story of Lazarus in his new freestyle “Re Dumetsi” featuring Apu Sebekedi, exploring faith, redemption and spiritual renewal.

Stogie T has drawn inspiration from one of the Bible’s most recognised miracles for his latest freestyle, “Re Dumetsi,” featuring longtime collaborator Apu Sebekedi.

The veteran South African rapper, whose real name is Tumi Molekane, uses the story of Lazarus to explore themes of death, redemption, faith and spiritual renewal.

The release is accompanied by the words from John 11:43 — “Lazarus, come out!” — a reference to the moment Jesus calls Lazarus out of the tomb after raising him from the dead.

Stogie T Connects Lazarus to Spiritual Renewal

In the message accompanying the freestyle, Stogie T moves beyond the biblical account in Bethany and connects Lazarus’s resurrection to the broader Christian idea of redemption through Christ.

His interpretation presents Lazarus as a symbol of people trapped beneath what he describes as “our own decay and counterfeit living”. From there, the rapper frames Christ’s call as an invitation towards spiritual renewal and a new way of living.

The freestyle also draws a distinction between the physical resurrection of Lazarus and the spiritual meaning Stogie T associates with the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Rather than simply retelling the biblical story, the rapper uses Lazarus as a metaphor for spiritual death and the possibility of emerging from circumstances that have left people feeling buried or disconnected.

Apu Sebekedi Joins Stogie T

“Re Dumetsi” features Apu Sebekedi, who has previously collaborated with Stogie T.

The release’s visual presentation incorporates Paul Gustave Doré’s 1865 depiction of the Lazarus story, adding another layer of historical and religious imagery to the freestyle.

The track also incorporates elements associated with “Aroma” by Fat Joe, Jadakiss and Stove God Cooks, alongside preaching from Pastor Conrad Mbewe of Grace to You.

The release has already sparked discussion among listeners, particularly around its openly Christian message. Some fans referred to Stogie T as “Reverend Stog” and encouraged him to continue exploring the Gospel through his music.

Apu Sebekedi also reacted to the release, describing his involvement as both a blessing and an honour.

Stogie T Continues Exploring Faith and History

“Re Dumetsi” follows a broader creative direction that has seen Stogie T combine hip-hop with historical, political and spiritual themes.

His 2025 album ANOMY similarly explored questions surrounding history, identity, power and faith, reflecting the rapper’s long-standing interest in using dense lyricism to examine complex subjects.

With “Re Dumetsi”, Stogie T turns his attention firmly towards scripture, using the story of Lazarus as a framework for discussing spiritual death, redemption and the possibility of new life.

The freestyle adds another faith-driven chapter to the veteran MC’s evolving body of work.
